Thrissur Pooram — April / May
The Thrissur Pooram was born in the late 18th century, when Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin, invited the temples of the region to gather together at the Vadakkunnathan Temple complex in a single grand festival. What he created in 1796 has since grown into something that defies easy description, widely regarded as the largest and most spectacular temple festival in India, drawing over a million people to a single day in a single city.
Every year on the Pooram star day of the Malayalam month of Medam, ten temples converge at Thekkinkadu Maidanam in a grand procession. Two rival groups, Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady, face each other with their caparisoned elephants adorned in gleaming nettipattam and silk parasols. The Kudamattam then unfolds: a mesmerising, perfectly choreographed exchange of ornate parasols between the two groups before thousands of transfixed onlookers.
Beneath the ancient Ilanji tree, the celebrated Ilanjithara Melam ensemble builds its percussion into something that feels less like music and more like a force of nature. As night falls, the Vedikettu, one of Kerala’s most breathtaking fireworks displays, lights up the sky for hours.
