Rann Utsav — November to February

The Rann of Kutch is not a landscape that announces itself. It arrives slowly, a vast, flat horizon of white salt stretching further than the eye can follow, silent in a way that feels almost deliberate. For centuries this seasonal salt marsh in Gujarat’s Kutch district was known more for its harsh remoteness than its beauty. That changed in 2005, when the Gujarat Tourism Department launched Rann Utsav, transforming what was once an overlooked corner of the country into one of India’s most distinctive festivals.

Running for over a hundred days through the cooler winter months, Rann Utsav sets up its Tent City in Dhordo, a small village roughly 80 kilometres from Bhuj, as its base. By day, visitors wander through stalls of Kutchi craftsmanship, with mirror-work embroidery, hand-block printing, silver jewellery, and pottery, pausing to watch artisans at work. Evenings bring folk music and garba performances to open-air stages, while camel rides and ATV trails trace the edge of the desert. The festival’s most unforgettable moments belong to the full moon nights, when moonlight falls on the white salt flats and the entire landscape seems to glow from within.

For visitors, the Rann of Kutch under a full moon is one of those sights that you realise, quietly and with some surprise, that you will never forget.
