Hampi Utsav — January / February
At its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries, Vijayanagara was among the wealthiest cities in the world. Portuguese and Persian travellers wrote of a capital so vast and magnificent it rivalled Rome, its markets overflowing with silks, spices, and jewels, its temples towering above a landscape of sculpted granite. Today, those ruins survive as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Vijayanagara district, Karnataka, and for three days every year, Hampi Utsav brings them back to life.
Also known as Vijaya Utsav, the Festival of Victory, this state-organised cultural celebration draws its spirit from the great Vasantotsava pageants of Emperor Krishnadevaraya’s court. Classical and folk dance performances by artists from across Karnataka fill stages set against the Virupaksha Temple and the Vittala complex, whose famous stone chariot has become the festival’s most iconic image. The Janapada Kalavahini, a grand procession of folk artists, drummers, costumed performers, and tableaux, winds through the heritage site each morning, while light and sound shows illuminate the ancient monuments after dark, narrating the story of the empire they once belonged to.
For visitors, standing among these stones at night, with music in the air and history all around, is an experience that very few festivals in the world can replicate.
