Hemis Festival — June / July

Guru Padmasambhava, revered in Tibetan Buddhism for spreading the faith across the Himalayas, is the heart of everything that happens at Hemis.

Celebrated since the 8th century at Hemis Monastery in Ladakh, roughly 45 kilometres from Leh, the festival marks his birth anniversary on the tenth day of the fifth Tibetan lunar month. The festival gained further prominence in the 17th century when King Sengge Namgyal restored the monastery, making it a significant centre for Buddhist learning.

Over two days, the monastery’s courtyard transforms into something between theatre and prayer. Monks in layered robes and elaborate masks perform the Cham dance, moving in slow, deliberate patterns to the sound of drums, cymbals, and longhorns, each gesture carrying the weight of centuries of meaning.

Thangkas are unfurled for the gathered crowd, and once every twelve years, the largest thangka in Ladakh is revealed, an event that draws pilgrims from across the region.

For visitors, watching those masked figures move against a backdrop of Himalayan silence is an experience that no photograph quite captures.
