Apricot Blossom Festival, Ladakh — April
For a few weeks each spring, before the high passes open and the summer crowds arrive, Ladakh belongs entirely to the apricot tree. Pink and white blossoms spread through the lower valleys in waves, across Sham, the Aryan Valley, Nubra, and Kargil, transforming one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes into something unexpectedly tender.
The Apricot Blossom Festival, known locally as Chuli Mendok, was launched in 2023 by Ladakh Tourism as a community-rooted celebration of this fleeting window. Rather than a single venue, it unfolds across villages including Skurbuchan, Alchi, Dha-Hanu, Turtuk, and Garkone over several weeks in April, with different communities hosting on different days. Visitors are welcomed into orchards and homestays at a pace of travel that is rare even by Ladakhi standards, with slow walks between blossoming trees, folk music in open courtyards, archery contests, and markets laid with hand-woven textiles and local handicrafts.
The apricot itself threads through everything. Brought to Ladakh along ancient Silk Road trade routes, it remains central to the region’s rural economy. Known locally as chuli, Ladakh’s Raktsey Karpo variety is unique to the region and prized for its sweetness. Jams, dried fruit, juices, and local brews made from the harvest give the festival a flavour as distinctive as its scenery.
For visitors, there are very few places in the world where a fruit tree in bloom can make you stop walking and simply stand still.
