Nehru Trophy Boat Race — August / September

In 1952, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alappuzha in Kerala and witnessed something that stopped him in his tracks: dozens of oarsmen moving in perfect unison, driving long, curved snake boats across the backwaters with a speed and synchrony that seemed almost impossible. He donated a silver trophy on the spot, and the race has carried his name ever since.

Held annually on the tranquil waters of Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is Kerala’s most celebrated water festival and one of India’s great sporting spectacles. The stars of the race are the chundan valloms, or snake boats, stretching over a hundred feet long and powered by over a hundred oarsmen rowing in disciplined rhythm to the beat of traditional chants. The boats, many of them with storied histories and fierce village loyalties behind them, compete in a regatta that draws over two lakh spectators to the lakefront. Since 2019, the race has served as the grand finale of the Champions Boat League, bringing national broadcast attention to what has always been a deeply local celebration.

For visitors, watching those great curved prows surge through the water while the crowd erupts around you is the kind of afternoon that Kerala never lets you forget.
