Mahindra Kabira Festival — December
Kabir was born in Varanasi in the 15th century and spent his life there, weaving cloth and writing poetry that refused to belong to any single religion, caste, or tradition. A mystic, a provocateur, and one of the most beloved voices in Indian literary history, his dohas spoke of a God beyond temple and mosque, of devotion that needed no intermediary. Every December, the city that shaped him becomes the stage for a festival in his name.
The Mahindra Kabira Festival, produced by Teamwork Arts and organised by the Mahindra Group, is held over three days at Guleria Kothi and Shivala Ghat along the banks of the Ganga in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
Since its first edition, it has brought together an extraordinary range of classical and folk musicians, Sufi singers, poets, scholars, and storytellers to celebrate Kabir’s syncretic philosophy. Past performers have included Prahlad Singh Tipaniya, Mukhtiyar Ali, Aruna Sairam, Shubha Mudgal, Kailash Kher, Indian Ocean, Kabir Cafe, and Malini Awasthi, among many others. Beyond the performances, the programme weaves in heritage walks through Varanasi’s ancient bylanes, boat rides on the Ganga, local food trails, and the deeply moving Ganga Aarti at dusk.
For visitors, attending the Kabira Festival means spending three days in one of the world’s oldest cities, letting its music, its river, and its ideas do what Kabir always intended: quietly rearrange something inside you.
