Buddha Purnima — May

Born a prince in Lumbini, Nepal, Siddhartha Gautama renounced his life of privilege in search of a deeper truth. After years of wandering and meditation, he attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, and became the Buddha, the Awakened One.

Buddha Purnima, falling on the full moon of the month of Vaishakha, marks three extraordinary moments in that one life: his birth, his enlightenment, and his passing.

Known as Vesak in Sri Lanka and Bhutan, and Buddha Jayanti across Nepal and India, the day is observed with quiet reverence, monks chanting sutras, devotees offering flowers and incense at temples, and acts of charity and fasting as expressions of compassion.

In Bodh Gaya and Sarnath, pilgrims gather at some of Buddhism’s holiest sites. In Sri Lanka, entire streets glow with handmade paper lanterns and colourful pandols depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life.

For those drawn to stillness and meaning, this is a day that genuinely moves you.
