Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, whose life and teachings have shaped Hindu philosophy for millennia. Born at midnight in Mathura to end the tyranny of the demon king Kansa, Krishna grew up to become a symbol of divine love, wisdom, and the triumph of righteousness over evil. His words to Arjuna on the battlefield, preserved in the Bhagavad Gita, remain one of the most revered spiritual texts in the world.
The midnight hour is the heart of the celebration. Across India and Nepal, devotees fast through the day and gather at temples adorned with flowers and lights, waiting for the exact moment of Krishna’s birth to break into prayer, song, and the ringing of bells. In Mathura and Vrindavan, the festivities stretch over days with Raas Leela performances drawing thousands. In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi sees teams form human pyramids to smash a suspended pot of curd, a joyful nod to Krishna’s legendary love of butter. In Nepal, the Krishna Mandir in Patan and Kathmandu’s ISKCON Temple draw large gatherings of devotees for chanting, offering, and communal prayer.
For visitors, the energy of an entire city holding its breath until midnight, and then erupting in devotion, is unlike anything else.
