Onam — August / September
According to legend, Kerala once flourished under a king so just and beloved that no one went hungry and the land itself seemed to bloom in abundance. His name was Mahabali, and even after Lord Vishnu sent him to the netherworld, he was granted one boon: to visit his people once a year. Onam is that homecoming.
Celebrated over ten days in the Malayali month of Chingam, Onam is Kerala’s most cherished festival, observed across caste, faith, and community. Each morning, households lay fresh Pookalam, intricate floral carpets that grow more elaborate with every passing day.
On Thiruvonam, the most sacred day, families gather for the grand Onasadya, a feast of over twenty traditional dishes served on banana leaves, from avial and thoran to the sweetness of payasam. The backwaters come alive with Vallamkali, the legendary snake boat races, where teams row long Chundan Vallams in fierce, breathtaking unison. Women perform the graceful Kaikottikali, dancing in circles to folk songs, while Pulikali, performers painted as tigers, bring laughter and colour to the streets.
For visitors, Onam is Kerala at its most open-hearted, a festival that asks everyone to sit down, eat well, and stay a while.
