Bhai Dooj / Bhai Tika — October / November
Two days after Diwali, when the lamps have dimmed, and the sweets are nearly gone, one more celebration quietly takes centre stage. Bhai Dooj, known as Bhai Tika in Nepal, honours the bond between brothers and sisters. According to legend, Yamraj, the god of death, visited his sister Yami on this day; she welcomed him with aarti and applied a tilak on his forehead, and he declared that any brother who received his sister’s tilak on this day would be blessed with long life and protection.
Across India, sisters prepare a ceremonial thali, perform aarti, and apply tilak on their brother’s forehead, offering sweets and a home-cooked meal in a warm exchange of blessings and gifts. Brothers, in return, shower their sisters with presents and promises.
In Nepal, Bhai Tika falls on the final day of Tihar, a five-day festival of lights that honours crows, dogs, cows, and the goddess of wealth before culminating in this celebration of siblings. Sisters apply seven colours of tika on their brothers’ foreheads, offer garlands of makhamali flowers, sel roti, and sweets, while brothers offer tika in return.
For visitors, it is a tender, intimate festival that reveals how deeply family sits at the heart of South Asian life.
