Republic Day

When India gained independence in 1947, it was free but not yet fully sovereign. That changed on 26th January 1950, when the Constitution of India came into force, replacing colonial law and formally establishing the country as a democratic republic. The date was deliberate. Twenty years earlier, the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj, a demand for complete self-rule, on this same day.

Celebrated nationwide, the grandest festivities take place along Kartavya Path in New Delhi, where a spectacular parade brings together military processions, state tableaux, folk performances, and an Indian Air Force flypast. Flags are hoisted at schools, institutions, and government buildings across every state and union territory. The celebrations conclude on 29th January with the Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk.

For a visitor, watching India’s staggering diversity converge into one shared moment of pride is something that stays with you long after the tricolour comes down.
