Independence Day — 15th August

At the stroke of midnight on 15th August 1947, after nearly two centuries of British colonial rule, India stepped into freedom. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s now legendary “Tryst with Destiny” speech marked the moment a nation, long suppressed, finally found its voice. The independence that followed was hard won, shaped by decades of nonviolent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi and countless others who gave everything for a country they would not live to see free.

Celebrated every year as a national holiday, the most iconic ceremony unfolds at the Red Fort in Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the tricolour and addresses the nation. Across every state, flag hoisting ceremonies fill school grounds, government buildings, and public squares, accompanied by patriotic songs and cultural performances. Kite flying, a beloved Independence Day tradition in many parts of India, turns the August sky into a wash of colour.

For visitors, the collective pride pulsing through the country on this day is something entirely its own.
