Royal Highland Festival — 23 – 24 October 2026

Laya is one of Bhutan’s most remote settlements, a highland village in the Gasa district at over 3,800 metres above sea level, reachable only by a multi‑day trek from Gasa through some of the most dramatic Himalayan terrain in the country. The Layap people who live there, known for their distinctive conical bamboo hats and hand-woven garments, have herded yaks across these highlands for centuries. The Royal Highland Festival was established in 2016 under the vision of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to celebrate and sustain this way of life.

Held every October against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and rolling alpine grasslands, the festival brings together highland communities from across northern Bhutan. The Yak Beauty Contest, in which herders present their finest yaks for evaluation on health and appearance, is a crowd favourite and a reminder of how central the yak is to highland survival, providing milk, wool, and transport. Horse races, archery competitions, and highland strongman events reflect the physical culture of the Layaps, while stalls offer yak dairy products, hand-woven textiles, and traditional highland medicines. Folk songs and mask dances round out the programme.

For visitors willing to make the trek, the Royal Highland Festival is Bhutan at its most remote, most alive, and most revealing.
