Punakha Tshechu — February / March

Set in the courtyard of Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most breathtaking fortresses at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, Punakha Tshechu is among the most visually stunning of all Bhutan’s festivals. Held over three days after the Drubchen, it honours Guru Rinpoche and serves as an occasion for spiritual merit, community renewal, and the perpetuation of Bhutan’s ancient monastic traditions.

The dzong’s whitewashed towers and gilded rooftops form a natural backdrop as monks and laymen perform Cham dances in masks and layered silk robes. Folk songs and traditional music fill the intervals between dances, and the crowd, dressed in their finest traditional attire, gathers from villages across the Punakha valley. The festival culminates on its final morning with the unfurling of a giant Thongdrel depicting Guru Rinpoche, displayed briefly in the pre‑dawn light so that all who witness it may receive its blessings

For visitors, Punakha Tshechu offers something the photographs never quite capture: the texture of devotion in a place this old, this beautiful, and this entirely itself.
