Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival — November
Most of the world associates cherry blossoms with spring, with Japan’s famous Sakura season drawing millions each year. Shillong does something different. In the highlands of Meghalaya, the wild Himalayan cherry tree, Prunus cerasoides, blooms in autumn, turning the capital’s parks, hillsides, and roadsides into a wash of delicate pink and white at a time of year when no one expects it. Shillong is one of the only places in the world where this happens, and since 2016 the Cherry Blossom Festival has been gathering people here every November to celebrate it.
Over two days, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the lakeside grounds of Ward’s Lake become the setting for one of Northeast India’s most spirited festivals. International headliners, past performers include Akon, Clean Bandit, The Script, Jason Derulo, and Diplo, share the stage with local Khasi folk artists, while the programme stretches across indigenous cuisine stalls, fashion showcases, cosplay contests, wine tasting, and a Japan Zone introduced through Meghalaya’s official cultural partnership with Japan. The cherry trees blooming above it all give the festival a quality that no other music event in India quite replicates.
For visitors, standing under pink blossoms in November while the music carries across the Meghalaya hills is one of those experiences that quietly defies expectation.
