Konark Dance Festival — 1–5 December
Built in the 13th century by King Narasimha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the Sun Temple of Konark in Odisha is one of India’s most extraordinary architectural achievements, designed as a colossal stone chariot of the Sun God Surya, with 24 intricately carved wheels and seven horses in flight. Every surface tells a story. Since 1986, for five evenings each December, those stone-carved dancers have found living counterparts in the artists who perform at the Konark Dance Festival.
Organised by Odisha Tourism and the Odissi Research Centre, the festival was founded by the late Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan to bring India’s classical dance traditions back to the temple settings for which they were originally created. Celebrated artists from across the country perform Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, and Chhau in an open-air auditorium with the illuminated Sun Temple as their backdrop. As darkness falls over the Odisha coast, the temple’s stone carvings catch the light and the music carries across the casuarina trees.
The International Sand Art Festival at nearby Chandrabhaga Beach runs alongside, drawing master sand sculptors from across the world and making early December in Konark a rare convergence of ancient and living art.
For visitors, watching a classical dancer perform Odissi against the very temple that inspired the form is one of the most quietly profound experiences India has to offer.
