Taj Mahotsav — 18–27 February
Every February, in the shadow of the Taj Mahal, one of India’s most beloved cultural carnivals comes to life. Taj Mahotsav has been held since 1992 at Shilpgram, near the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and over three decades it has grown into one of the country’s most celebrated showcases of living craft traditions.
For ten days, over 400 artisans from across India set up alongside one of the world’s great monuments, bringing with them the full breadth of the country’s handmade traditions. Wood carvings from Saharanpur, marble inlay and zardozi embroidery from Agra, Chikan work from Lucknow, Kantha stitch from West Bengal, brass ware from Moradabad, silk and zari from Varanasi, and bamboo craft from the Northeast all find a place at the same fairground. Visitors can watch artisans at work, commission pieces directly, and carry home something made by hand in a tradition passed down through generations.
Evenings bring folk and classical performances from across India to open-air stages, with artists from the Brij Bhumi region lending the festival its most distinctive musical character. Food stalls offer regional specialities from across Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
For visitors, wandering through a craft fair with the Taj Mahal glowing in the background is the kind of afternoon that reminds you why you travel.
