Pushkar Camel Fair — October / November
Every year, as the Hindu month of Kartik reaches its full moon, something extraordinary unfolds in the small desert town of Pushkar in Rajasthan. Tens of thousands of Raika herders, the traditional camel-breeding communities of the region, trek across the Thar Desert with their animals to converge on the fairgrounds at the edge of the town. What begins as one of the world’s largest livestock markets, where camels, horses, and cattle are traded, groomed, and admired, gradually transforms into something far harder to describe.
Pushkar’s significance runs deeper than its fair. The town is home to one of the only temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator in Hindu mythology, and the sacred Pushkar Lake draws pilgrims who believe a holy dip on Kartik Purnima washes away a lifetime of sins. The fair and the pilgrimage have coexisted for centuries, lending the event a rare combination of commerce, devotion, and spectacle.
On the fairgrounds, camels are adorned with mirror-work embroidery and bells, paraded in beauty contests, and raced across the sand. Folk musicians, puppet shows, moustache competitions, and the famous Matka Tod contest fill the days with colour and noise. Hot air balloon rides over the fairgrounds at dawn have become one of Pushkar’s most coveted experiences.
For visitors, there is nowhere else in the world quite like Pushkar during the fair, a place where the ancient and the exuberant exist side by side without contradiction.
