Ziro Festival of Music — September
Tucked into the Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh, at an altitude of roughly 1,500 metres, with rice fields stretching toward pine-covered hills and the indigenous Apatani tribe as its hosts, the Ziro Festival of Music is unlike any other music festival in India. Founded in 2012, it was built on a belief that the best music deserves the best setting, and that a festival should leave its landscape better than it found it.
Over four days each September, more than forty independent artists from across India and the world take to stages constructed almost entirely from locally sourced bamboo. The lineup spans folk, experimental, indie, and electronic music, with a deliberate emphasis on artists from Northeast India who rarely find platforms elsewhere. Workshops, literary sessions through the Ziro Lit Fest, and community outreach programmes run alongside the performances, making the festival as much a cultural gathering as a musical one. Local artisans and community members are employed throughout, and the festival’s zero-waste ethos is woven into every detail, from bamboo infrastructure to waste segregation points scattered across the grounds.
For visitors, waking up to music in a valley this beautiful, surrounded by people who came here purely for the love of it, is the kind of experience that quietly changes what you think a festival can be.
