																Going beyond its
																pursuit of
																adopting the
																hub-and-spoke
																model, the
																Cochin
																International
																Airport Limited
																(CIAL) is
																planning to
																launch non-stop
																direct flight
																service to the
																US and Europe.

																As part of the
																initiative, CIAL
																has informed the
																Civil Aviation
																Ministry that
																airline
																companies
																willing to
																operate non-stop
																service to US
																and European
																destinations
																from Kochi would
																be given
																exemption in
																parking/landing
																fees for one
																year.

																"Currently,
																passengers
																travelling to
																Europe and the
																US are required
																to take
																connecting
																flights to metro
																airports in
																those countries;
																airports in
																Singapore and
																Kuala Lumpur in
																Southeast Asia;
																airports in the
																Middle East; or
																Colombo," said
																CIAL
																authorities.

																When CIAL, which
																registered a
																record footfall
																of 64 lakh
																passengers in
																the last fiscal
																year, consulted
																leading
																international
																airlines, most
																of them
																expressed
																apprehension
																over ensuring
																steady passenger
																flow from Kochi.

																Sources close to
																Air India said
																the Cochin
																International
																Airport Limited
																would have to
																wait for some
																more time before
																launching direct
																flight service
																to Europe and
																the US.

																The CIAL, which
																is the fourth
																largest airport
																in the country
																in terms of
																international
																traffic volume,
																has been staking
																claim for the
																'international
																hub' status. |
