Air India introduces on the spot payment for upgrade
Air India has introduced a scheme to upgrade passengers on the basis of spot payment of cash at airports. The scheme is called 'Get Up Front' and is applicable for both domestic and international sectors.

The upgrade at airport is subject to availability of seats and on First Come First Served Basis and also subject to the physical presence of a guest at the check-in counter. The scheme is being publicized through text cards at the airports.

The following measures have been taken to make Air India competitive with private airlines: Induction of brand new aircraft on several domestic & international routes to increase passenger appeal; Phasing out & grounding of old fleet; On Time Performance (OTP) is being monitored at the highest level within Air India on daily basis.

A video conference is anchored by Integrated Operation Control Centre (IOCC) every day in which the representatives of operating departments from four regions participate to review the previous day's operation and evolve process improvement wherever possible. This information was given by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minster of State for Civil Aviation, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.

Better air connectivity to Bengaluru from Namma Kudla starting March
Come March and there will be a flight to the state capital every two hours from this coastal city. At present, air connectivity to namma Bengaluru is not an issue for the city has nine flights that touch down at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) every day. While six of these flights are operated by Jet Airways, Spice Jet operates two and the latest entrant to the Mangaluru sector - Air Pegasus one. Jet Airways will add three more flights from March.

J T Radhakrishna, director, Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) said Jet Airways has indicated that it will add three more ATR flights to Bengaluru starting March 27. The additional flights will leave MIA at 2pm, 4.55pm and 10.45pm, he said, adding even as things stand now, it is Jet Airways that connects Mangaluru to Bengaluru last with its flight at 8.40pm. Incidentally, Jet Airways is also the first airline to touch down at MIA from KIA at 7am each day, he noted.

On reasons for airlines to plump so much for Mangaluru-Bengaluru sector, Radhakrishna surmised that Bengaluru has emerged as a hub for air travelers from Mangaluru to branch out to any other domestic or international destination. In fact, air travelers from Mangaluru can now travel to Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and even Belagavi via Bengaluru with the above mentioned airlines operating to these destinations and these additional flights will only increase their options.

The other sector that is favoured by airlines from Mangaluru is Mumbai. Jet Airways has plans to introduce an additional flight to Mumbai, also from March 27. "We are yet to get a plan of action for this new flight to Mumbai," he said. The additional flights will only add to the growth in traffic passenger from MIA - international and domestic which is projected to grow at 22% by April MIA is the 12th largest airport handling domestic, international passengers in India.
