Rajasthan fast becoming a hub of ‘marriage tourism’

Rajasthan has always enchanted the West, be its forts and palaces, culture, or ethnic costumes. For foreign tourists, the desert state has been a number one destination. But off late, the Westerners are choosing Rajasthan as ‘marriage destination’. Western couples are arriving in the state to solemnise their wedding according to Indian rites, which they believe will make their bond stronger. Places like Pushkar, Udaipur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer have become major destinations for foreign tourists and cash-rich NRIs. The big palaces and heritage hotels serve as the perfect venues. Add to that camels, elephants and ethnic jewellery, and they make Rajasthan a hot destination for royal weddings.

 
Dalai Lama's visit to boost Uttar Pradesh tourism
His Holiness the Dalai Lama will visit the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in the second week of December as part of an ongoing year-long celebration of the 2550 years of Lord Buddha's Mahaparinirvana. Uttar Pradesh state tourism minister, Mr Kawkab Hameed, said: "His Holiness will impart Buddha's teachings and conduct meditation at Kushinagar and Lucknow." The celebration that began with lighting 20,000 lamps on Buddha Purnima on May 13, 2006 will continue until May 14, 2007 with special programmes running concurrently at Jhansi, Sarnath, Sravasti, Ayodhya, Kaushambi, Bagpat, Agra, Chitrakoot and Sankisa.
 

Efforts on to develop Zanaskar as major tourist destination

The Kargil-Zanaskar region of Jammu and Kashmir is being developed as a major tourism destination in the state, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said here today. A campaign to promote the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Drass-Kargil-Zanaskar circuit as an attractive tourism destination is on both within and outside the country to woo holidaymakers to visit the region along with other tourism spots in the state.
 

Nepal

Tourfilm Jury Prix award to NTB

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has won Jury Prix award at Tourfilm 2006 held on October 3-7, 2006. Tourfilm, the world's oldest festival of films and videos on tourism is organized yearly by the Festival Committee, Czech Republic, which consists of Czech Tourism and the partner organizations. Naturally Nepal, the promotional video produced by NTB has given Nepal acclaimed award in Category I comprising videos and films appointed to presentations of countries, national boards, regions and cities. This is NTB's second prize in CD and Documentary category this year, the first being the PATA Gold Award in CD ROM category.

Galle Fort Development Project launched

The Galle Fort, a world heritage site is to shine again with the launching of a programme to conserve and develop the historical monuments of the Fort with US$ 3.4 million financial assistance from the Government of Netherlands. The project is initiated under the Sri Lanka-Netherland cultural co-operation programme. Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister M. Y. Abeywardene said five projects have been launched to conserve the Galle Fort and develop it into a cultural tourist city. The conservation will be headed by the "Galle Heritage Foundation" under the instructions of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage.

A new Ginger hotel unveils in Thiruvananthapuram

The Indian Hotels Company unveiled its GenNext ‘Smart Basics’ hotel - ‘Ginger’ - at Technopark Campus, next to Club House, Kazakuttom, Thiruvananthapuram. The hotel, situated on a one-acre plot, is complete with 100 air-conditioned rooms, modern restaurants, ATMs, cyber cafes, banquets and conference halls. The hotel is viewed as a boon for the large number of foreign visitors to the Technopark who until now had to stay in the heart of the capital city. The Technopark campus, situated on the outskirts of the capital, has undergone massive infrastructure development over the years. It employs 12,500 people in about 105 IT firms located in the campus.
 

The Metropolitan Hotel Nikko being upgraded
The Metropolitan Hotel Nikko is being upgraded and a club floor and spa facility are being added. Scheduled to open in January 2007, the health club Zen is opening as a rejuvenating, state of the art, ultra modern Spa, Zen by Serena Spa. The spa is going to be managed by the Serena Spa group.
 
Trident Hilton hotels upgraded
The Trident Hilton hotels located in Agra, Jaipur and Cochin have been upgraded to 5 star hotels. Trident Hilton Agra is set amidst beautiful gardens and is only a few minutes walk away from the famous Taj Mahal. The hotel is built of the red stone reminiscent of the Mughal era, designed around landscaped central courtyard with swimming pool and fountains. It has 138 elegantly furnished rooms and suites. Trident Hilton Jaipur is situated en route to Jaipur's renowned Amber Fort and overlooks the scenic Mansagar Lake and the picturesque Aravalli ranges. The hotel's 138 rooms overlook the lake or the mountains. Trident Hilton Cochin is conveniently located within easy reach of tourist sights and the business district, the hotel's well-appointed rooms are built around a picturesque central courtyard with a swimming pool and beautiful landscaped garden.
 

Royal Orchid Group takes over KRS Hotel in Mysore

Royal Orchid Group recently entered into a joint venture with Jungle Lodges & Resorts Ltd. Government of Karnataka to manage the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Hotel, which has now been rechristened Royal Orchid Brindavan. The property has been leased out to Royal Orchid Group. The hotel will be converted into an exclusive 25-room property with all five star facilities. Spread across 1.5 acres and located around 15 kms from the city, Royal Orchid Brindavan will also have a spa, conference room, health club and swimming pool among other facilities. The hotel, which remained closed for seven years, is currently being restored and renovated by the Royal Orchid Group; operations are scheduled to start shortly.

Another camp for the Char Dham traveler
After the stupendous success of its luxury tented accommodation at Char Dhams for the spiritual traveller, Leisure Hotels Ltd has added a fifth camp in Maneri for the pilgrims and the corporate traveller. The Char Dhams are the four sacred spots for Hindus that rest in the majestic peaks of the Himalayas at Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The Maneri camp is located at a distance of 22 km from Uttarkashi on Highway no 108, just before a village called Sainj. The camp, although operational throughout the year, would be used as a transit point for the Char Dham pilgrims from May till October. The Camp also offers other recreational facilities like rafting, nature walks and treasure hunts. These camps are equipped with electricity and hot and cold water for 24 hours, filtered water for cooking, room service, multi-cuisine meals and a doctor on call.


Club Mahindra plans 4 new resorts countrywide

Club Mahindra Holidays is planning to soon set up theme-based resorts in Kumbalgarh (Rajasthan), Lonavala (Maharashtra), Kollam (Kerala) and Corbett (Uttaranchal). This expansion would culminate in increasing the number of Club Mahindra resorts from the current 15 to 19. Club Mahindra’s property at Lonavala will consist of 125 fully furnished rooms and have a village setting theme in its décor and architecture. The Kumbalgarh resort will include 53 well appointed rooms with a Rajasthani theme from the Mewar region. The resort at Kerala will be set against the impressive backwaters and rich foliage of the region, and will be designed to reflect the flavours and character of Kerala. At Corbett, a 50 room resort will be set amidst the sights and sounds of the surrounding wildlife.

Kosgoda Beach Resort elevated to a luxury 5 star hotel

The Kosgoda Beach Resort, which underwent a massive refurbishment, has been elevated to a luxury five star hotel. Picturesquely located on a spit, in the southern coastal belt, the Hotel is flanked by the deep green lagoon on one side, and the roaring blue ocean on the other, while a meandering turquoise swimming pool completes this aquatic paradise.

 

 


Chaaya Citadel Kandy relaunched
Chayya Citadel Kandy, formally known as Citadel was re-launched recently as the third hotel under the John Keells Hotels’ re-branding initiative. Overlooking the majestic Mahaweli, the Citadel is the ideal base of operation for the heritage tourist. The Citadel is within half an hour from one of the most sacred Buddhist places of worship, the Sacred Temple of the Buddha’s Tooth, the beautiful Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, the dreamlike Kandy Lake and other places of interest.


Second Angsana Spa for Sri Lanka
The Banyan Tree group opened its second Angsana Spa in Sri Lanka called Angsana City Club and Spa Crescat City. The spa covers 5,060sq ft and boasts seven single treatment rooms and four signature double treatment rooms. The spa also has a roof deck swimming pool, tennis courts set in a landscaped garden and a gym. A range of Ayurvedic treatments have also been developed, which are unique to the spa. They combine Ayurvedic massage, ancient Shirodhara, Indian head massage and a herbal body polish. Another treatment menu highlight is the Yoga Massage, which aims to restore wellbeing through deep breathing meditation and yoga movements designed to stretch and loosen muscles.

Air Sahara adds Thiruvananthapuram to its network, starts direct service to Kochi
Air Sahara has commenced direct Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram and Delhi-Kochi flights. The airlines will offer daily return flights from New Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram via Kochi and a direct Thiruvananthapuram-Delhi service. It is the only airline to operate a direct return service between Delhi and Kochi. Air Sahara will also continue with its Delhi-Hyderabad-Kochi return service as before, making it the only airline to offer two connections between Delhi and Kochi.

Air Deccan flags off Kullu-Delhi ATR flights

Air Deccan has started its 40-plus-seater ATR flight connecting the hill-station of Kullu to the national capital, several years after the service was discontinued. The flight will depart Delhi at 1015 hrs. and arrive Kullu at 1130 hrs. The flight will depart Kullu at 1130 hrs. and arrive in Delhi at 1310 hrs. The flights are operational daily.

Air Deccan launches flights to Bellary
Air Deccan has launched daily flights to Bellary (Hampi) from Bangalore & Goa. The flight will depart Bangalore at 1255 hrs. and arrive in Bellary at 1400 hrs. The flight will depart Bellary at 1710 hrs. and arrive in Bangalore at 1810 hrs. The flight will depart Bellary at 1425 hrs. and arrive in Goa at 1535 hrs. The flight will depart Goa at 1550 hrs. and arrive in Bangalore at 1655 hrs.

Sri Lanka

SriLankan Airlines launches Flights to Goa
SriLankan Airlines has commenced flights from Colombo to the famed Indian coastal resort town of Goa – the airline’s 50th global destination and its 10th in India. The twice-weekly Colombo-Goa flights, which take two hours, now operate every Monday and Saturday.

Lufthansa launches Kolkata Frahkfurt direct flight
Lufthansa is starting operations on the Kolkata - Frankfurt sector from 1st December. The flight will depart Kolkata on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flight will depart from Frankfurt on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.


The Aviation Fuel price increased from 7th November in Nepal

Due to increase in the aviation fuel price by the government all domestic airlines have increased fuel surcharge from 7th November 2006. Click here to read the fuel surcharge for all sectors in all fare.

Kingfisher Enters into Arrangement with Delta Airlines
India's Kingfisher Airlines will carry within the country passengers of Delta Air Lines. Delta Airlines has started a direct non-stop flight between John F Kennedy Airport in New York to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai from 1st November. A major feature of the arrangement between the two airlines is that Kingfisher's flights to Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore from Mumbai will start within two hours of the Delta flight arriving in the city. Kingfisher has made arrangements with travel agents in the United States to sell tickets for its flights. This would allow a passenger travelling to cities served by Kingfisher to buy tickets at one window and coordinate travel plans and flights.

China Airlines boosts Delhi flights
China Airlines has added two weekly flights on its Taipei-Delhi route, effective October 30. Flight CI 181 will depart every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 21:45 from Taipei, and arrive in Delhi at 02:30 the next day. Return flight CI 182 will leave every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 03:45 and arrive in Taipei at 11:50.

Air China has decided to resume Kathmandu – Lhasa –Kathmandu flights
Air China has decided to resume Kathmandu – Lhasa –Kathmandu flights even in winter this year. They will operate the flight once a week between Kathmandu – Lhasa –Kathmandu until 24 March 2007 and then 4 flights a week from 29 March to 30 June, 2007. There will be daily flights between Kathmandu – Lhasa – Kathmandu from 01 July, 2007 to 29 October, 2007.

Thai Airways adds three more Indian destinations
Thai Airways has commenced air services to three new Indian cities - Varanasi, Gaya and Hyderabad – from Bangkok from October 30. The flights from Gaya and Varanasi to Bangkok and its return journey would operate on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, while those between Hyderabad and Bangkok would operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

AI to fly daily on Dubai-Mangalore route soon
AI Express, which currently operates three flights a week from Dubai to Managlore, has extended it into a daily service from Nov 1. The launch of a direct flight from Dubai makes the Bajpe airport at Mangalore the second destination in Karnataka to operate international flights after Bangalore.

Indian introduces Bangalore, Male flight
Domestic and regional carrier Indian has introduced an international air link between Bangalore and Male (Maldives) from November 2. The non-stop flight would be operated with Airbus A-320 aircraft, offering 20 seats in Business Class and 125 seats in the Economy Class.
