Government announces GST rates. Hotels hit hard

As reported by us in our earlier editions of Creatively Yours, the Government of India is introducing a nationwide overhaul of its taxation systems. From a system of multiple taxes across the different states, India will now have a unified GST systems where all goods and services will have the same tax for that segment across the country.

The rates for the various services have now been announced. Tour Operators & Travel Agents were out into a bearable bracket, but what has surprised everyone is that Hotels & Restaurants have seen themselves placed in the highest rate slab of 28%. This has truly shocked everyone involved with Indian tourism. The consequence of this is a major increase in prices of all hotel services, which will impact international arrivals into India.

The Indian tourism industry is lobbying hard for some relief, but so far appeals have fallen on deaf years. Below are some links that will highlight the concerns and steps taken.

UPDATE – Sunday, June 18, 2017
The government has increased the threshold of the minimum room rate for US$ 77 approx. to USD 116 approx. This will help many base 5 star and 4 star properties. Further details are awaited.
