BSNL launches free WiFi at Taj Mahal

Next time you are at the Taj Mahal, log on to high-speed Internet, courtesy WiFi hotspots installed by state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).
Users can access the web for free for 30 minutes, every 24 hours, thrice a month. Beyond this, users can opt for subscription plans of Rs.20 (for 30 minutes), Rs.30 (60 minutes), Rs.50 (120 minutes) and Rs.70 (full day).

The WiFi facility at Taj Mahal was inagurated on Tuesday by Union communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, as part of the government’s plans to improve facilities at tourist destinations.

As part of the project, the government plans to connect at least 25 major tourist spots by June end and more than 100, including Khajuraho and Jagannath Puri, by March 2016. Major tourist spots like Sarnath and Varanasi have already been connected under the project.

The WiFi network uses an optical fibre backbone using GPON technology (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks) which can provide backhaul broadband bandwidth up to 100 Mbps through BSNL’s MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) network.
This is separate from BSNL’s plans to set up WiFi hotspots in various major towns and cities using the same technology with the National Optical Fibre Network as the backbone.
